Brenda Aloff has been involved with animals her entire life. She got her first pony when she was four and had a succession of horses, which she showed both
in the Open and Class A Circuit. Her family always had pet dogs and working hunting dogs (upland game dogs and hounds). Her mother's father was a farmer.
Love of and forming relationships with animals is as natural for Brenda as breathing, and as necessary. She does not believe this is enough though; the
development of mechanical skills and the mental game is everything in animal training.
Brenda showed horses on the 4-H circuit and open circuit starting at age 9. As she got a bit older, 16 or so, she showed on the Class A Circuit, Arabs,
Morgans and Saddlebreds, did private riding instruction and trained many different horses (including initial backing), for herself and others, and worked with
various professional trainers, was a 4-H Group Leader, and involved in Riding Programs for the Handicapped. At age twenty-five Brenda had her daughter,
showed horses for another couple of years and then retired her old show horse and raised her baby.
Beginning in 1993, Brenda opened and operated a commercial boarding kennel and did in home behavioral counseling. In 2000, she devoted herself entirely to
behavior consultations and training and built a training center building. Brenda has written several manuscripts on dog training and behavior, given
training seminars, given private and group lessons (for several years she taught 2 group classes every night Monday through Friday and did 2 to 5 behavior
consults a day), produced a canine television program, and served as a consultant in canine behavior for local media sources.
As a hobby Brenda has competed with Smooth Fox Terriers, a GSD and a Border Collie in AKC and UKC Obedience, as her demanding schedule has allowed. She has
also competed in Agility and Freestyle with Smooth Fox Terriers. She has shown a Smooth Fox Terrier to a breed championship with three major wins. Brenda's
students have numerous titles in both competition Obedience, Tracking, Earthdog Tests, Freestyle, Schutzhund and Agility.
Brenda has evaluated and temperament-tested many, many litters of puppies and older rescue dogs.
Brenda did about 13 years of rescue work, mostly Smooths, but she often went to the local shelter and rehabilitated many mixed breeds as well. She did the
evaluation, rehabilitation, and screened and placed the dogs in homes.
Brenda has also worked with Search and Rescue teams and works on a regular basis with a local SAR team with problem solving various training issues that come
up. She has done clinics for several SAR teams both in Michigan and on the East Coast.
She has done numerous clinics for humane societies and rescue groups and shelters (in the US and in Canada).
Brenda has done specialized work with Scent Detection (melanoma cancer cells), and has also worked with cadaver dogs as well as live find dogs.
Brenda has done consulting work for Leader Dogs For The Blind in Rochester Hills, Michigan, as well as working one on one with their trainers and doing
clinics for them. She has taken some of their dogs home and done service work with them, to evaluate dogs and to return them into the program after a "problem"
has developed. She has done clinics for Paws With A Cause service dogs.
Brenda has done field work once the service dogs have been placed in their homes, on a private basis; helping the dogs and handlers with problems that were
encountered. An example is a dog whose blind handler was hit by a car and then the dog and handler had, understandably, some confidence issues. Another fellow
had a dog and didn't want to give the dog up; he was in a wheelchair (quadriplegic), so she trained this dog to do service work for him.
Brenda's area of specialization is problem behaviour in canines. A large percentage of her practice consists of dogs that are referred to her when
traditional training techniques have been exhausted or failed. A high percentage of her clientele consists of dogs with aggression problems.
Currently Brenda is re-training a Morgan gelding for dressage. His former career was Saddle Seat. The first year she showed him he was Midwest Dressage
Association Intro To Dressage Champion, and last year he was Midwest Dressage Training Level Novice Horse Champion. On a National level, Knolltop's First
Edition garnered high percentage in the American Morgan Horse Open Competition (Schooling Shows).
Brenda keeps sheep and has done lambing, shearing, hand spinning, etc. She uses her Border Collie for farm work and herding with the sheep.
Brenda has written and produced programs for the local TV station on what you need to know before you get a dog. It was very popular and aired several times.
Brenda has done radio interviews with a variety of people, including Steve Dale of WGN radio in Chicago.
Currently she has a monthly appointment to interview and take live questions onWTOK Speak! Radio (Oklahoma City) with Pat Becker Wallas (producer of dog
programs for PBS television) and Kaylan Head (a professional dog trainer).
